From the time it opened in 1834, attorneys at Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell (HHM) have been encouraged to give back to the community, said Kevin Murphy, a member of HHM and chair of the management committee.
From supporting educational and health-related programs and services to participating in beautification projects and sitting on nonprofit boards, lawyers take part in numerous efforts each year, said Murphy.
With offices in Youngstown, Warren and Salem and well over a dozen attorneys working at the firm, Murphy said it can be difficult to stay abreast of what everyone is doing.
That’s why firm leaders began detailing the year’s activities in an online Community Involvement Report. The first report was published last year and summarized the contributions made by HHM and its attorneys in 2018.
“Lawyers at the firm often volunteer for several initiatives, which makes it difficult to keep track of everything,” said Murphy. “The report enables us to showcase all our endeavors in one place, allowing clients, potential clients, community partners and referral sources to see the full picture.
“It also lets our lawyers know about all the volunteer opportunities that are available to them.”
Unveiled at the end of January, the 2019 report, which can be accessed at https://www.hhmlaw.com/2019-community-involvement-report/, explains the ways in which the firm and its lawyers provided support to more than 60 local organizations, including efforts aimed at bolstering economic development, healthcare, the arts, youth sports and food distribution.
“We’re proud to support a wide variety of causes that are important to us as a firm, our clients and as individuals in the communities where we work and live,” said Murphy, who serves on the board of trustees of Packard Park in Warren.
This year the firm sponsored a number of events, including the Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corporation’s golf outing, the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s Taste of the Valley, Leadership Mahoning Valley’s Justice Day and the Panerathon, a 10K run and two-mile fun run or walk, which benefits the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center in Youngstown.
In addition to serving on nonprofit boards and committees, attorneys also worked to improve the look and feel of several communities.
In downtown Youngstown, lawyers planted flowers along the east side of Central Square and in Warren attorneys took part in an annual beautification effort with Trumbull 100, hanging flower baskets at Courthouse Square.
Others participated in Salem Regional Medical Center Foundation’s Hearts and Arts Wellness and Craft Expo.
The firm also provided financial support to the Fund for Warren’s Future, which seeks to encourage and support economic development within the city of Warren.
“We’re proud of our efforts, which align with the interests of our clients who also strongly support the community,” said Murphy.
